It’s so like us to assume God has gone somewhere else – that God has left us on our own.
It is easy to see how God is faithful and loving when the water parts before us and our enemies fall down at our sides. What if we recount our failures in the midst of God’s mighty acts?

The freedom we have as people of God is to not live in fear. Like Job, we have the freedom to rail against God for the things that are not our fault and we don’t understand. And in this freedom, somehow, we are able to find peace in our not knowing.
As we pray for our country and our leaders this July 4th, may we pray for them as individuals as well as in their official capacity. As we give thanks for our freedom, may our prayers include freedom for all peoples.
