Advent Reflections: John the Baptist and the Kingdom of God (7)

holy spirit

This is the seventh in a series of Advent reflections on Luke 3:7-18.

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, – Luke 3:15 (NRSV)

The Promised One, the Expected One, Messiah

We’ve heard that the people of the time

had certain ideas about he Promised One,

thought the Expected One would be born in a palace

or come down from Heaven on a cloud,

never expected the Messiah

would be sent as a baby to people like Mary and Joseph…

Our question is this:

What is our expectation?

What promise do we hold to our hearts?

Who is this Messiah born to us?

Ann Weems, from From Advent’s Alleluia to Easter’s Morning Light

So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. – Luke 3:18 (NRSV)
