Advent (Matthew 1)

Sing O come all ye Faithful   Listen Matthew 1:18-25   Discuss

  • Joseph’s righteousness was also just – breaking off his betrothal with Mary was within his rights of the marriage contract. His decision to do it quietly was an act of mercy. Consider this Advent season – when has God shown you righteousness, justice, AND mercy in the last few weeks?
  • Jesus is named twice in this short passage. Which name – JESUS, Yahweh saves or IMMANUEL, God with us – is most meaningful to you this Christmas season?

To do In the last weeks of Christmastide, find at least one opportunity where you are tempted to show only righteousness / justice but withhold mercy – and choose to offer mercy as well.   Sing Joy to the World   Pray  (from 1 John 1–3)

Lord, You did indeed step down into darkness to bring light to the world. You are light, and in You there is no darkness at all. Living among us, You brought us a new commandment: that we should believe in the name of Jesus Christ and love one another.

Spirit of Life, let us love, not only in word or speech, but also in truth and action.

As we stand in Your light we see what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! But whoever says, “I am in the light,”while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness.

Spirit of Truth, may it be said of us that we live in the lightloving our brother and sister. May Your light keep us from stumbling.

If we say that we have fellowship with You while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as You Yourself are in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Spirit of Grace, may the darkness in us pass away, and Your true light shine brightly. Lord, hear our prayer.

  Respond (1 John 2:24–25)

In the light and love of Christ, as what we heard from the beginning abides in us, we abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is what He has promised us: eternal life!

In Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, we are forgiven!

Amen!
