moment

You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out

Inside and outside the Church, we humans share the common desire for transforming moments.  In the Church, we call them mountaintop experiences. They are the instances in which we feel closest to God or receive piercing clarity about ourselves.

I seek these moments, too. How can we not?  We live our everyday lives letting the moments pass until we get to the next important thing.  Doing the laundry is not very exciting. Or eating healthy.  Or catching up on email.  But these are the moments that consume most of our days.

Should we throw them away so easily?

This picture was taken at the moment of a game winning field goal with no time left on the clock.  The win was a huge upset.  It was one of the defining moments of the year.  But it was only one moment.

There were 3,599 moments in this football game before we got to this one.  Each mattered to get to this final moment.  And before the 3,600 moments of this game, there were countless moments spent doing drills and lifting weights. There were countless moments of team-building and planning by coaches.

Is that one moment more important than all the others?
Is that one moment more important than those that follow?

May this moment right now be a reminder that we live most of our life in Ordinary Time.  It is preparation for the next mountaintop experience as well as our response to the last one.  This moment, as ordinary and everyday as it might be, matters.  It is just as important as any other.  For even though we will have significant moments in our lives, the moments of Ordinary Time are the true sum of our lives.  May we consider them as holy as God does.
