fly

Now and then, I listen to conversations that are not mine.  There are secrets that are shared – even though the speakers do not know they are sharing them with me.  I become privy to dreams about the future.  And sometimes arguments.  But I never say a word.

When I leave my listening post, it is always to my detriment.  I fly unrestrained and shamelessly into danger.  I should remain hidden – or hide again.  But I seem drawn to that which seeks to do me harm.  I don’t know if it’s my ignorance or my willfulness.

Every now and then, I see a way out from my self-imprisonment.  I’m drawn to the window, where the freedom of the outside pours in.  I see the leaves moving and long to feel the breeze.  But even as I find a window, I never seem to find the door.

Have you wondered what it’s like to be me?

Secrets to share, but no words with which to tell them?

To be ignored when out of sight but hated when seen or heard?

Seemingly free, and yet trapped.

I am just a fly on the wall.

Fly on the wall…by ctbehrens

Did you ever think that God created flies and humans on the same day?

God said, “Let the earth produce every kind of living thing: livestock, crawling things, and wildlife.” And that’s what happened.  God made every kind of wildlife, every kind of livestock, and every kind of creature that crawls on the ground. God saw how good it was.

Then God said, “Let us make humanity in our image to resemble us so that they may take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and all the crawling things on earth.”

God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good.  There was evening and there was morning: the sixth day.

Genesis 1:24-26, 31 (CEB)

  1. Wow. Just, O. This is outstanding, and deep. I’ll never look at a fly the same way again.
