Prayers of the People for worship this week, based on Psalm 93.
The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity. – Psalm 93:1-2 (NIV)
Sovereign God, this world feels far from firm and secure. It seems that death greets us everyday in the news. In Paris, Baghdad, Beirut, Palestine and Mali, we wonder if terror wins. On the shores of Greece, Italy and Turkey, refugees wash up on the shores both dead and alive – because this is somehow a more hopeful path than remaining in their homes. In the United States, politics and fear threaten to shred the fabric of our democracy. It seems that we are lost in the valley of death, with faint memories of green pastures and still waters.
This is why we gather together as a community of faith: to remind one another that you reign in majesty and that you are strong. To proclaim together that in you, we are secure.
The seas have lifted up, LORD, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea—the LORD on high is mighty. – Psalm 93:3-4 (NIV)
Like the disciples, we can so easily be fearful of angry seas and pounding waves. We wonder if you realize that we are perishing. Do you realize that chaotic waters threaten? We wonder if our faith is strong enough.
This is why we gather as a community of faith: to remind one another that you are mightier than the chaos that threatens. To proclaim together that you are mighty.
Your statutes, LORD, stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days. – Psalm 93:5 (NIV)
As we prayed earlier, the grass withers and the flowers fade but your Word stands forever. In the midst of an overwhelming refugee crisis, your Word stands firm. In the midst of terror, your Word stands firm. In the midst of sickness, your Word stands firm. In the midst of change and uncertainty, your Word stands firm. In the midst of every day of our life and the endlessness of our eternity, your Word stands firm.
This is why we gather as a community of faith: to remind one another that the Word of God stands firm regardless of a changing world around us. To proclaim together that holiness will always adorn your house.
Faithful and loving God, lead us in the ways everlasting. Holy Spirit, nurture and edify our faith. Jesus, it is only in your name that we have the boldness to pray together, saying…
