This is the first in a series of reflections on John 1.
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word was with God in the beginning. Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word nothing came into being. What came into being through the Word was life, and the life was the light for all people. – John 1:1-4 (CEB)
When God began to create the heavens and the earth- the earth was without shape or form, it was dark over the deep sea, and God’s wind swept over the waters— God said, “Let there be light.” And so light appeared. – Genesis 1:1-3 (CEB)
The first word spoken in Scripture is God’s command for there to be light – and it was good. Nothing else came into being before that word was spoken. Light chased away the darkness, creating a canvas for the world to be created.
Light itself is creative. Light allows things to be seen that would otherwise be hidden. It allows us to see a smile or grimace of pain in someone we love that may otherwise be lost in darkness. Light illuminates our minds to help us understand what would otherwise be unknown. Light is good.
God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness. God named the light Day and the darkness Night. There was evening and there was morning: the first day. – Genesis 1:4-5 (CEB)
